Barley's Select beaten by in-form Norfolk Over 60's
Former Suffolk county star Derek Barley brought a Select team to
Lakeside for a match against Norfolk Over 60’s but could not stop Norfolk
recording a 31-17 home win. Norfolk started well with a 6-2 points win in the
first session with Sheila Redwood, Billie Barker & Melvyn Barker leading
the way with a 14-8 win. Barley’s Select hit straight back to level the game in
the second session with only Alice Payne, Keith Halford & Mike Boswell
successful for Norfolk. In the third session Malcolm Reynolds, Margaret
Reynolds & Sue Hunt scored their second win of the day but with only Jane
Frary’s triple, who drew 6-6, adding to Norfolk’s total Derek Barley’s team
moved 13-11 up. Norfolk Over 60’s moved up a gear in the next session sweeping
the board with four wins as Rex Cox, Marjorie Hall & Geoff Payne all
skipped their triples to their first wins of the day and Mike Boswell’s triple

10th Anniversary Celebration
It
was celebration day at Lakeside Country Club as the Norfolk Over 60's
Squad celebrated their 10th Anniversary. NCSMBA President John Aggas and
Past President John Richardson both attended the event which saw a
special match between players from the very first Norfolk Over 60's team
and the current line-up. John Aggas opened the day by welcoming
everyone and congratulating the Norfolk Over 60's Squad on ten
successful years. He finished his address by presenting the organizers
Teresa Goldsmith & Avril Grapes with bouquets in gratitude for their
work in running the squad for ten years. The match was hotly contested
and with one session remaining the scores were tied at 10 points apiece.
The last session saw the current line-up win four games to clinch an
18-12 win and their top triple on the day were Sheila Redwood, John
Poynter & Jock Pollock with wins of 11-5, 14-8 & 11-5. Ray
Potter, Jimmy Dye & Gerald Chilvers led the way for the original
team with two wins of 7-5 & 11-6. John Richardson closed the
anniversary day by highlighting the success of the Norfolk Over 60's
over the ten years and their many trips away which included Cyprus,
Malta, Turkey, Ireland, the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Wight. He
reminisced about his trip to Cyprus with the squad and the memories that
it had brought back for him from his time on Cyprus during less happy
days. He spoke of the special comradeship developed between players over
the years and of the fact that members who were now unable to bowl
still liked to attend squad days to spend the day with their old
friends. John Richardson then presented members of the original team
with medals to commemorate the event before making a further
presentation of baskets of flowers to Teresa Goldsmith & Avril
Grapes. Members and guests then enjoyed a slice of a 10 Year Anniversary
Cake made specially for the day.

Friends Of Kent v Norfolk Over 60's
Norfolk
Over 60's visited Kent for the return match against the Friends of Kent
side managed by David Kruse. A bright start by Norfolk saw them 10-2 up
on points after the first triples session and with the first pairs
session ending level the visitors hoped to be on their way to avenging
their home defeat but it was not to be. The match turned in Kent's
favour in the second triples session as only Ray Potter, Frank Edy &
Peter Johnson won and the next pairs session proved to be bad news for
Norfolk with three Kent wins and just one Norfolk win. After the six
sessions were completed Kent had completed the double over Norfolk with a
34-26 points win. The only Norfolk triple to remain unbeaten were
Sprowston's Mary Jarvis, Pat Smart & Peter Smart with an 11-0 win
and two 8-8 draws. In the pairs Saxlingham's Alice Payne & Kirby
Bedon's Selwyn Goldsmith won their three games by 16-12, 12-7 &
13-10 to gain maximum points. Peter Smart & Selwyn Goldsmith were
both playing as under-age guests in the Norfolk team.

Norfolk Over 60's v Friends of Kent
Our
Kent friends came to Norfolk for a visit and with each side comprising
of 12 pairs & 8 triples ten mats were in use for a good all day
Saturday match. Kent made a good start establishing a 13-7 points lead
in the first session and Norfolk were always on the back foot after this
set-back. The opening session did see a great performance by Shirley
George & Jock Pollock who did Norfolk proud winning by 29-6. The
final score was 69-51 to Kent on points and we will now travel to Kent
looking for revenge with the match date set as Saturday 22nd May. Top
Norfolk scorers on the day were Jenny Walker & Roy Grapes who won
all their three games while Len Thurston & John Poynter won two
games and drew the other.

Edwin
Smith brought his Scarborough bowlers to Norfolk for Easter Weekend and

673 shots. With Teresa awarding Scarborough two extra points for shots
an honourable 57-57 draw was agreed. Scarborough started strongly on
Friday winning 20-8 on points despite Alice Payne, Len Thurston &

10th Anniversary
This yearwe
celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Norfolk Over 60's Squad. We began
on the 25th August 2000 with a home match against Cambridgeshire, which
we won, as well as the return fixture. 28 people played and 12 are
still with us today: Geoff & Alice Payne, Laurie & Marjorie
Hall, Ray & Geraldine Potter, Pat Bunn, Dot Dawson, Gerald Chilvers,
Jimmy Dye, Russell Hales & Barbara Owen. Its great that they have
kept with us. Over the 10 years we have traveled to the Isle of Skye in
the north, to the Isle of Wight in the south, to Lowestoft in the east
and to Ireland in the west. We have started short mat bowls in Paphos,
Cyprus & Malta and taken a relaxing break in Turkey.
We have had
laughs like trying to kiss the Blarney Stone, dancing round broomsticks
and walking in a rainstorm in Ireland. We said prayers and learnt a new
type of bowls in Scotland. One person got bit by a cat in Cyprus. We
walked up so many hills, got caught in a thunderstorm in Malta. We have
made many bowling friends in West Sussex, West Midlands, Suffolk,
Cambridgeshire, Northants, West Sussex, Kent, Yorkshire, Essex &
Gloucestershire. We have loved and lost people who have touched our
lives and our hearts and we will never forget them. Avril & I have
enjoyed these last 10 years and I hope we have another successful 10
Years.

Norfolk Over 60's v Northants Over 60's
Eastern England League 25-03-10
Norfolk
suffered a 14-20 home defeat against Northants at Lakeside. It proved
to be a close game throughout but two last end defeats for Jock Pollock spelled disappointment after a great match.
On The Road Again to North Yorkshire!
Once
again the much traveled Norfolk Over 60's team embarked on another long
weekend jaunt orchestrated by organizer Teresa Goldsmith. Early on the
morning of the last Friday in September their coach departed Norwich
bound for North Yorkshire where matches had been arranged against a
Scarborough League select team, put together by Edwin Smith on the
Saturday, and a Sunday match against North Yorkshire's "A" and "B" teams
arranged by North Yorkshire Secretary Roger Green. For this, their
second trip to North Yorkshire, Teresa had arranged a 4 night stay at
the Burn Hall Hotel in Huby situated about nine miles from York. The
staff of the hotel, which had recently undergone a major refurbishment,
gave the Norfolk team a warm welcome on their arrival prior to the party
enjoying their first meal at the hotel.
Saturday morning after
breakfast it was back on the coach to head for the B.S.A Sports Centre
in Swinton where Edwin had arranged a full days bowling for the 44
Norfolk bowlers with 8 mats in place for a 12 triple and 4 pair format
which gave everyone 4 games each. Edwin had brought a party of bowlers
to Norfolk where the Norfolk Over 60's had put out three different teams
over three days on Easter Bank Holiday weekend to play them so this was
a return fixture. An excellent day of bowls was enjoyed by all with the
Norfolk team emerging winners by 77-51 on points, 680-557 on shots.
Edwin presented all the Norfolk bowlers with an attractive Scarborough
fridge magnet and the Norfolk bowlers presented each of their opponents
with a Norfolk SMBA badge featuring the Norfolk Wherry. Teresa also
presented Edwin with a cut glass Colman's Mustard Pot to remind him of
his bowling friends in Norfolk. Edwin will bring a party of bowlers back
to Norfolk on the next Easter weekend for another match.
Sunday
morning the Norfolk Over 60's coach headed for the York & District
Indoor Bowls Club at Dringhouses to face the North Yorkshire County
Squad on their warm-up weekend fixture. The day consisted of two matches
with one Norfolk side playing the North Yorkshire "A" team on four mats
and another Norfolk Over 60's side playing North Yorkshire "B" on
another four mats. As expected the "A" team proved to be too tough a nut
to crack and stormed to a 37-3 victory but the Norfolk Over 60's gained
revenge with a 25-15 points win against North Yorkshire "B". John
Andreae of Cromer and Peter Johnson of Kirby Bedon found themselves in
unfamiliar territory playing four wood singles for Norfolk but excelled
with John winning 19-13 and 16-13 and Peter winning 18-7 and 16-9 as all
ten points came Norfolk's way in that discipline. In the closing
ceremony Roger Green announced he hoped to bring the North Yorkshire
county team to Norfolk in September 2010 for a return fixture.
The
Norfolk Over 60's team received a tremendous warm welcome on both days
form the North Yorkshire bowlers and officials and enjoyed both matches
immensely. On the Monday the group enjoyed a relaxed trip out spending
time in Pickering and Whitby on a glorious day considering it was late
September. Some elected to take a boat trip in Whitby while others went
on the open top tour bus. Others including Norfolk Chairman Selwyn
Goldsmith, who had accompanied Teresa and the squad on their trip to the
north, spent their time searching out the best fish and chip shop they
could find. A slight delay occured when the coach broke down on their
way back to the hotel but a rescue coach from a local company was
quickly acquired to get the bowlers safely back to their hotel in time
for dinner. A fitter called to the scene of the breakdown ensured that
the coach and Chris the coach driver were also back to the hotel in time
for Chris to get his meal as well. At 9.30am on Tuesday the happy but
tired Norfolk Over 60's squad headed back to Norfolk where some players
were needed by their clubs for winter league action that evening. Who
said retirement was the time to put your feet up!
