Winter Leagues Round-Up

BURE

Two of the Norfolk Leagues saw major changes over the season as a wind of change blew through them. Bob Carter and Watton Expendables entered the Bure League as new teams with both sides packed with County Team players. Defending champions Halvergate’s domination of the Bure was sure to be threatened especially with them losing England international Jason Woods who would now captain Bob Carter. Former West Mids star Chris Willies had put his new Watton Expendables team together and was also looking to make a major impact on the Bure League. As it turned out Halvergate did not give up their title easily and pushed Bob Carter to the wire with Carter clinching the Bure League title by the narrowest margin of just one point. The same two teams fought out a fierce two leg final in the Bure Cup but once again Carter came out on top winning on points by just 25-23 in the two-leg final. To complete an incredible debut season Bob Carter players also lifted the Bure Triples, Bure Pairs and Bure Singles titles but not without fierce pressure by their greatest rivals. Next year Halvergate will no doubt come back determined to recapture some of the silverware lost. Meanwhile Watton Expendables established themselves in third place in the Bure table but failed to match the pace of their two biggest rivals finishing 14 points behind second placed Halvergate and 15 points behind Bob Carter. In the Bure Cup Watton Expendables went out on shots in the preliminary round against Halvergate.

CITY OF NORWICH

Horsford Gold had ruled the City of Norwich League for years but losing some star names seriously weakened their team and they failed to compete with teams they had brushed aside in earlier seasons. This season it was an experienced Horsford Heroes team who led the pack winning seventeen of their eighteen fixtures and finishing 23 points clear of second placed Thorpe Marriott. Taverham were a surprise packet finishing in third place while Horsford Gold finished well adrift in fifth place. Thorpe Marriott lifted the City Shield beating Horsford Gold 8-0 in the final.

BRECKLAND

There was no such change in the Breckland League where the story of the day remained the same with no team strong enough to challenge the might of Wymondham. They finished 36 points clear of second placed Carleton Rode who finished six points ahead of third placed Connaught “A”. The normal huge home wins produced by Wymondham carried on with visiting teams unable to match Wymondham on their home ground. Away teams still continue to struggle badly to match the home side on the Wymondham mats. Wymondham wrapped up the double beating Connaught “A” in the final of the Breckland 5 Pairs despite a spirited performance by the Connaught team at Hingham. Wymondham also won the Norwich Cup defeating Halvergate 31-23 on shots in the final.

SOUTH NORFOLK

Another league that is easy to predict the outcome of is the South Norfolk where Hempnall retained the title. They finished as champions again with Horsford in second place.

COASTAL LEAGUE & COASTAL CUP

The Coastal League is played up to Christmas and Bradwell Acorns won the title just four points ahead of Bradwell Dynamos. In the New Year the Coastal Cup is played and this time Bradwell Dynamos came out on top four points ahead of Bradwell Dynamos. Woodbastwick Owls finished in third place in both the League and Cup tables.

FRIENDLY AFTERNOON LEAGUE

The Friendly League was won by Thetford finishing six points ahead of runners-up Diss. An 8-2 home win for Thetford against Harling in their last match clinched the title.

WAVENEY LEAGUE

The cross border Waveney League was won by Broome who finished ahead of Wortwell.
