Carter pass tough test at Hevingham

Bure League new boys Bob Carter made it four straight wins in a row with a hard fought 7-3 away win at Hevingham. In a tight first half Hevingham’s Pat Williamson, Teresa Goldsmith & Selwyn Goldsmith inflicted Carter’s first mat loss of the season after their three 10-0 wins when they defeated Debbie Pye, Simon Warnes & England’s Jason Woods. The game had been incredibly close and low scoring with the triples tied at 5-5 after nine ends. The home triple then cut loose scoring counts of four on both the seventh and eighth ends before adding a five on the ninth end to lead 18-5. The game finished 19-8 in favour of Goldsmith’s Hevingham triple. On the other mat Hevingham’s Steve Easter, Lesley Turner & Brian Turner faced tough opposition with Alfie Woods leading for England’s Morgan Warnes & AJ Brown. After eleven ends the game was level at 11-11 but Brown’s triple reeled off eight shots over the last four ends to win 19-11. This left the match level on points at the interval but Hevingham three shots up. After the break an entertaining game between Hevingham’s Val Easter, Pat Hall & Marjorie Hall and Carter’s Jean Woods, Melvin Woods & Nigel Willard ended in a 14-14 draw. The game marked the comeback of Melvin Woods after his knee operation and he put in a solid performance. Going into the penultimate end Nigel Willard’s Carter triple trailed by three shots and when Willard stepped up to play the last bowl of the end Hevingham held three shots and were in a great position. But former Norman Centre & Kirby Bedon star Willard dug deep on his vast experience and drew a perfect forehand bowl stopping just a fraction before the ditch line to take shot. On the last end he again produced two great woods to earn his triple a draw. The overall outcome of the match though was decided on mat one as Gavin Gray, Jack Gray & Gary Best of Bob Carter were in sparkling form beating Melvyn Barker’s triple 24-4 to earn the visitors a 7-3 away win. England international Best was at his brilliant best while young Jack Gray demonstrated just how far his game has improved as he did everything his skip asked him to do.
