The draw for the SMPT English Masters, being played at Bromsgrove IBC on the 4th & 5th February, has handed Wymondham’s Jack Pye with an early clash with talented Irishman Gary McNabb. They will meet in an eagerly anticipated game in Group 8 with Pye, currently top ranked English bowler in the SMPT World Rankings, keen to progress and improve his ranking even more. Hempnall’s Neil Davidson will be happy to have avoided an early meeting with McNabb, his toughest test in Group 12 could well be Essex bowler Nigel Reed. Group 11 should provide a feast of bowls with defending champion James Bucknall, 2014 champion Cecil Dillon of Ireland, Welsh bowlers Andrew Jones & Chris Davies and England’s Paul Bax all involved. In Group 11 2013 champion Joseph Beattie’s main challenge could be provided by Nigel Nicholls. SMPT World ranked number one Dimitri Payne of Belgium will be challenged by England’s Nicholas Truscott & Ireland’s Vincent Dornan in Group 20. If there is a group of death it must be Group 21 where World number 3 Jonathan Payne of Belgium, World number 4 Joel Hagar of Sweden, Stephen Williams of Wales and Steve Puttock of England all in the mix. Pauline Beattie of Ireland is the big name in Group 17 which also features an SMPT debut for Connaught’s young bowler Jack Marshall.
