In what is without doubt the shock result of the season Wymondham were beaten 8-2 at Thetford in the Breckland League. It was a remarkable result for the new boys on the block and shows the massive strides the club has made since it was formed by Pauline Barsby who has every reason to be proud of her achievement in creating the first short mat bowls club in the town of Thetford. Wymondham’s Hayley Osborne, David Chadwick & Chris Mann had a flying start and led 10-0 but in an incredible turnaround the Thetford triple of Susan Colledge, Jason Martin & Peter Harvey stormed back to win 18-16. On the other mat there was more cause for celebration for the home side as Linda Dixon, David Bourne & Peter Scarborough beat Melvyn Barker’s triple 12-11. Wymondham’s captain Debbie Sparham put in a great effort to save the day for the champions as she skipped her triple, with Billie Barker at lead and Simon Warnes at number two, to a 23-10 win against Mick Colledge, Shane Wissner & Peter Rawdanowicz. But Thetford completed an amazing evening as Nigel Bevan, Chloe Suffolk & team captain Kieran Suffolk beat Jon Sparham’s triple 28-7. With regulars Jack Pye and Mark Linsdell missing from their side again, plus the retirement from regular bowling of Pat & Brian Saunders, Wymondham have an almighty battle on their hands to retain the Breckland League title this year. Connaught “A” won 8-2 at Shropham and are now just three points behind league leaders Wymondham. Elaine Oatway, Owen Secker & Bob Oatway led the way with a 20-7 win while Dave Quadling, Richard Harrison & Sheila Bragg won 20-8 against Dennis Green’s triple. The biggest threat though is likely to come from Carleton Rode who are twelve points behind in third place but have two games in hand on the top two. Other results this week saw Harling Unicorns beat Harling Griffins 10-0 in a local derby while Banham won by 7-3 at home to Connaught “A”.
