City League begins with wins for Marriott & Heroes

A crucial 13-4 win for Thorpe Marriott’s Jenny Walker, Gavin Gray & Jack Gray against Linda Tooes, Chris Brooks & Steve Hall of First Bus saw Thorpe Marriott’s City of Norwich League season begin with a valuable 10-4 away win. Both teams won two games apiece but the nine shot win for Jack Gray’s triple enabled the visitors to collect the six match points. Thorpe Marriott’s other win was gained by Gillian Amos, Gerald Potter & Robin Amos who beat Mac Carmen, Rex Cox & David Sharpe. First Bus wins were gained by David Quadling, Colin Coman & Bob Oatway against Tony Turner, and Di Quadling, Betty Cox & Lesley Crowe against Derek Sheldrake. Costessey entertained Horsford Heroes as they both teams played their opening game of the season. The match marked the return of David Dewing to the Horsford Heroes team after a few seasons away from the club. In his first match he played number two in Roger Frank’s triple and they produced a 15-5 win against Joy Townsend’s triple. Another of Horsford’s long time players Chris Woodhouse skipped his triple to a 16-3 win against Mike Ottaway’s triple while former England international John Aggas skipped his triple to Horsford’s third win beating Will Townsend’s triple 9-3. Costessey's only point of the match was gained by Graham Tweed’s triple who drew 11-11 against the talented David Crosby. Graham Tweed should be pleased with that result, even though Horsford Heroes won the match 13-1 on points, as David Crosby is one of the most talented skips plying his trade in the City League. It is Norfolk’s loss that Crosby has never been able to make himself available for selection for the Norfolk squad because of his commitments to various bowls codes.
