Halvergate kept up their unbeaten record in the Bure League with an 8-2 away win at Thorpe Marriott that moved them three points clear at the top. The match marked the league debut of Alfie Woods, son of Halvergate’s England international Jason Woods, at the remarkably young age of just seven. With both his father Jason, and his grandfather Melvin Woods and grandmother Jean Woods, all regulars on the short mat bowls scene it was surely inevitable that Alfie would inherit the short mat bowls gene and set his sights on establishing his place in the game. Last month Alfie impressed onlookers by finishing third in Norfolk’s qualifying heat for the ESMBA National Under 18’s Championships to claim a place in the finals representing Norfolk.
