Horsford BC produce shock win

Bure Cup

In a busy week of bowls the shock result was without doubt Horsford BC beating Halvergate 14-10 on points in the first leg of their Bure Cup match. Halvergate remain favourites to progress, with their home leg still to be played, but Horsford BC will be delighted to have inflicted a first leg defeat on the cup holders. Horsford BC enjoyed a fabulous first half as they shocked their illustrious opponents by building up a 10-2 points lead with only Keith Cooke’s triple winning a game for the visitors. Halvergate fought back in the second half winning four of the six games. Barbara Russell, David Laycock & Pauline Strivens had a night to remember as they reeled off three straight wins beating David Lamb’s triple 4-3, Keith Cooke’s triple 7-6 and Ryan Fox’s triple 8-7. Janet Seaton, Ernie Mills & Dennis Seaton picked up four points out of six with a 5-2 win against Jason Woods and a 9-2 win against Ryan Fox.

Breckland League

Harling Griffins top the table after a 9-1 home win against Forncett made it three out of three. George Cody’s triple won 19-9 and they are one point ahead of Wymondham, Defending champions Wymondham were their normal invincible selves at home to Connaught where they collected another 10-0 win. AJ Brown’s triple won 28-8, Jon Sparham’s triple won 23-5, Debbie Sparham won 24-9 and Jack Pye won by 22-10. Carleton Rode broke their losing streak by beating visitors Shropham by 10-0 with Jill Davidson, Russell Davidson & Trish Taylor leading the way with a 33-4 win. Connaught won by 8-2 at home to Shropham with David Aldous, Richard Broad & Paul McDonald winning 33-4. Forncett are third in the table after an 8-2 home win against Thetford.

City of Norwich League

British Rail remain bottom of the table after an 11-3 home defeat at the hands of Horsford Heroes. Chris Woodhouse’s triple were top scorers for Horsford with a 20-4 win while David Crosby’s triple won 11-7. Taverham produced a 12-2 home win against Jarrolds with Nigel James, Pat Hall & Jane James winning 22-3 and Trevor Winter, David Riches & Richard Moore winning 13-6. Horsford Blue won 11-3 at home to Windows with Piero Cognetti, Ken Reynolds & Tim Blackman romping to a 19-5 win. In the heats of the City League Triples R Ayres, B Ayers & C Walsgrove of Horsford Gold won the heat at First Bus with British Rail’s M Baker runner-up. At Horsford heroes venue the triple of Pat Williamson, Alan Bunn & Andy Drummie representing Windows were winners with Derek Sheldrake’s Thorpe Marriott triple second. The Thorpe Marriott heat was won by R Steele, M Southgate & M Ottaway of Costessey with R McPhee’s Horsford Blue triple second.

South Norfolk League

East Harling collected a 10-0 South Norfolk League maximum win at Mulbarton with Mike Tarrant’s triple winning 20-5.

Waveney League

Broome are top after a 9-0 home win against Carlton while Bradwell moved into third place with a 6-3 home win against Ilketshall.

ESMBA Open Fours

Norfolk’s Gary Best, playing with Jody Frampton, Richard Stagg & Danny Hogben, won the event to earn a World Cup place in the England team. The runners-up included Norfolk’s Jason Woods who played with Ross Dunkley, Nathan Caines & Adam Easthope.
