Ireland won the SMPT World Cup for the sixth time in a row at the Falcon Bowling & Social Club in Chelmsford yesterday after defeating England in the final. Ireland, Wales, Norway & the Rest of the World team contested Group A which Ireland won with Wales finishing in second place. Group B was made up by England, Scotland, Sweden & Belgium which England won with Sweden in second place. Both semi-finals resulted in 6-0 wins for Ireland against Sweden and England against Wales. The final was a tighter affair but once again Ireland came out on top after beating England 4-2. Ireland’s wins came courtesy of Joe Beattie, who beat England’s Ed Sawbridge 15-11, and Mark Beattie who beat Craig Burgess 12-7. England's two wins were earned by Peter Roberts, with a 9-8 win against Gary McNabb, and Nigel Nicholls who beat Pauline Beattie 10-7.
