Short Mat Bowls in Norfolk Schools Campaign

Roger Green of the NCSMBA Committee is launching this campaign aimed at bringing our sport to the attention of young people in local schools. While mats and other equipment is no problem we do have a shortage of small bowls such as size 0, 1 & 2 for the children to use. Anyone willing to donate any spare small bowls they have for Roger to use please contact the NCSMBA Secretary Mrs Jane Frary whose details can be found by clicking on the Management Team tab on the left. Also anyone willing to loan Roger small bowls for a period of time please contact Jane.

Brand New: Youth Initiative in Short Mat Bowls in Norfolk

The green shoots of economic recovery may not be evident yet but one Youth Club is nurturing their own green shoots of expectation. Since their formation in August 2007 Horsford Youth Club has actively promoted a varied sporting programme. This has included the successful introduction of the popular indoor sport of Short Mat Bowls to sixty registered local children. Members of Horsford Heroes short mat bowls club first attended the Youth Club just over a year ago and are now a regular fixture offering advice and coaching to children aged between eleven and sixteen.  The game allows all ages, sexes and abilities, the chance to develop a keen tactical eye in this non contact yet competitive sport. Through close collaboration between Horsford Heroes and the Youth Club more children are getting the opportunity to “roll up” and see for themselves that the game is appealing to everyone and not just the elderly as it is normally portrayed.

The benefits were evident in the recent annual challenge match between the two bowls clubs in the village. Lewis Robson, Brad Mills and Jack Lenton all appeared in the Horsford Heroes team against Horsford B.C and impressed everyone watching including NCSMBA President John Aggas, a former England international. Andy Drummee, Secretary of the Youth Club and member of Horsford Heroes, is keen to see the momentum continue and is delighted with a £659 “Awards For All Grant” from the National Lottery. The Youth Club has recently acquired their own short mat bowls mat and need to obtain a range of bowls suitable for the children and this award will make that possible. Andy said “A lot of young people receive bad press, but teenagers have an enormous amount of potential that just needs to be encouraged. Short mat bowls is allowing our youth club members the chance to put down their computer games and develop their self confidence”. Andy would be delighted to hear from anyone willing to donate any spare bowls up to size 3 to enable yet more young people to play and can be contacted on 01603-891372.
